Halloween is upon us again and I struck by a few thoughts. I was in ASDA recently (Walmarts UK supermarket) and I was amazed at how many things were on sale and how cheap they were. I guess I could moan that Halloween has become really commercialised, but its not exactly a religous festival, (was it ever??). My second thought was wow, look how the day has become such a business opportunity.

Beyond that, and on a deeper level, I find it interesting how we like to scare ourselves. Fear in a controlled environment is great – we get the adrenaline, the heightened sense of awareness and the racing heart without any of the dangers. Halloween is a great time of year to me because it is about doing something for the fun of it – getting dressed up and  acting silly.

These sort of events are very similar to self improvement, they shake us out of our daily monotony and remind us of how exciting and interesting life can be. If you celebrate Halloween I wish you a scary evening – make the most of it – have fun, throw a party, dunk for apples – but keep in the back of your mind how easily Halloween makes it to just have fun -why can’t we apply some of its sillyness to help make our  lives more enjoyable !!
