We all know people that are great dressers. I’m not talking about wacky dressers – they scream insecurity. I’m talking about people who are fashionable and stylish. Have you noticed how often these people are unpopular or unsuccessful ? They certainly seem to have way above average popularity and reasonably above average success.

Right now you are probably asking yourself, are they confident because they dress well, or do they dress well because they are confident ! I don’t think thats the right question to ask, although it is interesting. Celebrities, the rich and famous, and peer group leaders provide the role model for fashion whatever it may be at the time.

For a long time I thought fashion was ridiculous and didn’t pay any attention to it. Then i learnt some key things and well dressed people:

They don’t wear what looks good. They wear what looks good that is in fashion.Thereby seeming socially connected and tasteful.

They don’t question the point of the fashion game, rather they play along and reap the benefits.

If you dress radically differently from your social group then you are isolating yourself on some subconcious level, at least in the minds of the rest of the group. If you dress unusually, they will see it as an attempt to gain attention, and will lead to a level of orstricisation. If you dress poorly, you merely are indicating your social status within the group.

Many people, myself included find it hard to give up on ‘nice’ old clothes. However, you should always consider the messages wearing them sends out:

I am unaware of contemporary trends

I am unable to afford contemporary trends

I dislike the assocaitions of other clothing and wish to distance myself from these social groups.

Pretty powerful huh. One major goal for anyone wanting to learn social success is establishing your own style. This style should be based on a variety of role models. Choose a person you know socially, a celebrity and a type of style featured in a magazine, and then make a plan to acquire reasonably priced approximations of the styles they wear.

Trust me, as daft as it sounds, you will really start to see differences in the way your social group treats you !
